Custom software development, engineered around your business

When off-the-shelf tools force your teams into workarounds, custom software removes the friction. We design, build and evolve bespoke platforms that model how your business actually operates, and we write them so your own engineers can keep owning them.

When custom software is the right investment

Custom software makes sense when a process is core to how you compete, when the available products cover only part of it, or when the cost of stitching several tools together keeps growing. It rarely makes sense for commodity needs like payroll or email, and we will say so when an existing product is the better choice.

Typical triggers we see: critical workflows living in spreadsheets, a legacy application that nobody dares to change, licensing costs that scale faster than revenue, or a product idea that simply does not exist yet.

  • Internal platforms that replace a patchwork of tools and manual steps
  • Customer-facing products and portals with business-specific logic
  • Modernization of legacy applications without a risky big-bang rewrite
  • Enterprise software that must integrate with ERPs, identity providers and existing data

How we design the system

Every engagement starts with domain modelling: we map the business processes, the language your teams use and the rules that must never break. That model drives the architecture, so the code reflects the business rather than the database schema.

We default to a well-structured modular monolith and split out services only where independent scaling or deployment clearly pays off. Significant decisions are recorded as Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), so the reasoning survives long after the people who made them have moved on. When distributed components are justified, our backend and API engineering practice takes care of contracts, messaging and resilience.

Modernizing legacy applications safely

Rewriting a working system from scratch is one of the riskiest moves in software. We prefer the strangler-fig pattern: put a seam in front of the legacy application, move one capability at a time to the new platform, and retire old code only once the replacement has proven itself in production.

Characterization tests capture what the current system really does before anything changes, and data migrations are rehearsed against production-like copies. Many of these systems run on the JVM, which is why Java and Spring Boot are often our tools of choice for the new core.

Engineering practices that keep software maintainable

Maintainability is decided in the first weeks of a project. We work trunk-based with short-lived branches, mandatory code review and a CI pipeline that runs unit, integration and end-to-end tests on every change. Integration tests run against real dependencies using Testcontainers rather than mocks that drift from reality.

Security is part of the design, not a final checklist: we threat-model new features, follow OWASP ASVS as a baseline and keep dependencies patched automatically. Feature flags let us ship continuously while controlling exactly when users see a change.

Working together, and what you own at the end

We work in short iterations with a demo of working software at the end of each one, so priorities can change based on what you see rather than what was guessed months earlier. You get direct access to the engineers building your product, not a layer of account managers.

You own all source code and intellectual property from day one. At handover you receive the repositories, infrastructure as code, automated tests, architecture documentation, ADRs and operational runbooks, plus structured knowledge transfer to your team. If you would rather keep us involved, we can continue with ongoing development or technical consulting.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does custom software development cost?

Cost depends mainly on the number of distinct workflows, the integrations required, the data migration effort and how strict the security and compliance requirements are. After a short discovery phase we give you a scoped estimate with the assumptions written down, so you can see exactly what drives the number and where scope can be reduced.

Who owns the code and intellectual property?

You do. All source code, infrastructure definitions and documentation belong to you from the first commit and live in repositories you control. There is no lock-in to proprietary frameworks of ours.

Do you work fixed price or time and materials?

Both. A clearly bounded scope such as a discovery phase or a well-defined first release can be fixed price. Evolving products usually work better on a time-and-materials basis with a capped budget per iteration, which keeps you in control without paying a premium for uncertainty.

Can you take over an existing codebase?

Yes. We start with a structured review of the code, architecture, tests and deployment setup, then share a prioritized list of risks and improvements before changing anything. Our code audit and consulting service is often the first step.

What happens after launch?

Most clients keep us on for ongoing development, monitoring and maintenance, but that is your choice. Because you receive full documentation, runbooks and tests at handover, your own team or another partner can take over without starting from zero.
