Software architecture consulting from engineers who build

Some decisions shape a system for years: how to structure it, which technologies to bet on, whether to refactor or rewrite. We give independent, hands-on advice from engineers who build and run production systems, with recommendations that are specific, prioritized and honest about trade-offs.

When an outside view helps

An independent perspective is most valuable at turning points: before a major investment, when a system has slowed the team down, or when the people with the context are too close to the problem to see it clearly.

  • Planning a new platform or a major re-architecture
  • Deciding whether to refactor, rewrite or replace a legacy system
  • Assessing a codebase before an acquisition or investment
  • Delivery has slowed and the root cause is unclear
  • A growing team needs engineering standards and senior guidance

Architecture reviews

We review the architecture against the goals it actually needs to meet: scalability, reliability, security, cost and how fast the team can change it. That includes interviews with engineers and stakeholders, reading the code and infrastructure, and examining how the system behaves in production.

You receive a written report with a clear picture of the current state, the risks ranked by impact and likelihood, and a pragmatic target architecture with the steps to get there. Key recommendations are captured as Architecture Decision Records your team can adopt directly.

Technical due diligence and code audits

For investors and acquirers, we assess whether a product's technology can support the business plan: code quality, architecture, security posture, scalability, delivery practices, dependency and licensing risks, and how much knowledge depends on a few individuals.

Code audits go deeper into a specific codebase. We combine automated analysis with manual review of the critical paths, check test coverage where it matters, review security against OWASP guidance and assess build and deployment pipelines. Findings come with concrete remediation steps and rough effort estimates, not just a list of problems.

Roadmaps, CTO advisory and team enablement

For companies without a senior technical leader, or with a CTO who wants a sparring partner, we provide ongoing advisory: technology strategy, hiring support, vendor selection and review of major design decisions.

Team enablement focuses on making your engineers more effective on their own: establishing coding standards, review practices, testing strategy, CI/CD and incident processes, often through pairing on real work rather than slide decks.

From recommendation to implementation

Advice is only useful if it can be executed. Our recommendations come from the same engineers who deliver our custom software development, backend and cloud and DevOps work, so they are grounded in what is realistic to build and operate.

You can implement the roadmap with your own team, with our support, or have us deliver specific parts. Either way, you own every report, decision record and artifact we produce.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does an architecture review or code audit take?

It depends on the size of the system and the depth required. A focused review of one application is much shorter than due diligence across a whole product portfolio. We agree the scope, the questions to answer and the timeline before starting.

Do you need access to our source code?

For a meaningful audit, yes. We work under NDA, can use read-only access in your own environment, and do not copy code outside of it unless you agree. For early-stage due diligence, interviews and documentation can provide an initial assessment.

Will you recommend rewriting everything?

Rarely. Full rewrites are expensive and risky, and incremental improvement is usually the better path. We recommend a rewrite only when the evidence clearly supports it, and we explain why.

Can you also implement the recommendations?

Yes, but there is no obligation. Many clients implement recommendations with their own team and bring us in for specific parts or periodic reviews. Get in touch to discuss what would help most.

Have a project in mind?
